The Coast of Maine by 356
Friday - Sunday, Oct 5-7, 2007
Last October a caravan of 15 Typ356NE Porsches made tracks for the Coast of
Maine over the Columbus Day weekend for one last fall drive.
After 3, very active, days of exploring, shopping, eating, chasing wild moose
and porcupines, the group unanimously requested a “do-over” for 2007.
We’re going back!
As Columbus Day weekend is the final foliage and tourism weekend of the year,
lodging is always tight. Last year we were able to book our rooms at the
Glenmoor by the Sea just North of Camden at a very favorable rate (the Inn
Keeper/Owner is a Porsche enthusiast). For 2007 we have held every available
room (25) without deposit until April 15… at the 2006 rate.
Our Weekend:
Friday, Oct 5: Our weekend will start with a driver’s meeting on Friday morning
at the I-95 North rest area in Seabrook, NH. Then, north on I-95 to the Maine
Turnpike. Above Portland we’ll jump off the Pike in Freeport for some time at
Maine’s largest tourist attraction, L.L. Bean, and the surrounding outlets.
Continuing north, we’ll pass through Wiscassett then head east for lunch and
shopping in Boothbay Harbor. Returning to Route 1, our 356s will aim north for
Camden… antiquing, gift shops and home of the Maine Windjammer fleet. Check-in
at the Glenmoor By the Sea by late afternoon will be followed by relaxation on
your porch and/or a bit of 2 Buck Chuck overlooking Penobscot bay with the
group. Dinner later, in Lincolnville Beach 1½ miles north.
Saturday, Oct 7:
Breakfast in our rooms and a mid morning start for a run north through Belfast.
Then, south to Deer Island and Stonington. The day will be spent driving less
while leisurely touring fishing villages, antique shops and the sights of “Down
East” Maine beyond the reach of most tourists. Tour members will meander on back
to the Glenmoor by late afternoon. Following another possible session of 2 Buck
Chuck or Dark and Stormys, dinner will be arranged in either Camden or
Lincolnville. The evening will wrap up with the scoring and awards from our
“Wild Moose Chase”.
Sunday, Oct 8:
Breakfast and check out. Then, south 18 miles to the Owls Head Transportation
Museum for a couple of hours at their annual Foreign Car Festival and Antique
Air Show (WW1 biplanes dog fighting over our heads and a fascinating
transportation museum). As we will be making a mid morning grand entrance en
masse, an area has been reserved for our Porsches. Shortly after noon we’ll head
south. Hopefully crossing the Kittery/Portsmouth Bridge by late afternoon.
